Caelus is a clinically validated microbiome platform company for cardio-metabolic health. We develop defined next-generation microbial strains and bring them to market with partners through ingredient supply and selected co-development.
Our lead strain, Anaerobutyricum soehngenii CH106 (A. soehngenii), is the first live commensal gut bacterium of its kind to receive a positive safety opinion from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) under the EU Novel Food Regulation. Caelus’s GRAS notification for A. soehngenii resulted in FDA-notified GRAS status (GRN 1065), a testimony of the excellent safety profile and the rigour of the underlying data that Caelus presented.
The human gut is home to trillions of microbes that help digest food, regulate host physiology and immunity and maintain the gut barrier that protects the rest of the body. Over the past decade, research has shown just how central the gut microbiome is to our cardio-metabolic health and blood sugar regulation, and how specific bacteria and the substances they produce have been linked to healthy metabolic function.
Probiotics, live microorganisms that offer health benefits, have long been part of this story. Most probiotics, however, are broad blends of species of food bacteria and are aimed at general wellbeing. The science has now moved on: it is increasingly possible to identify individual, well-characterised gut bacterial strains, understand how they act and determine their role in the pathways that influence cardio-metabolic health. These more precisely understood strains are often referred to as “next-generation microbial strains”.
Caelus combines strain selection, clinical validation, regulatory strategy, intellectual property, process development and ingredient supply. Our intellectual property covers both the strains themselves and the processes used to manufacture them. This end-to-end platform turns defined next-generation microbial strains into partner-ready products.
Cardio-metabolic health is one of the defining health challenges of our time. Around 890 million adults worldwide live with obesity and more than 530 million with type 2 diabetes, while many more are affected by insulin resistance and prediabetes. As these conditions continue to grow in prevalence, there is a clear need for accessible, science-based solutions that can support people at an earlier stage, in a less invasive way, and alongside existing care.
Caelus builds on decades of microbiome research at leading universities and medical centres. Everything we do is grounded in evidence: we translate this scientific foundation into well-defined strains with clear biological mechanisms, supported by human clinical studies and peer-reviewed publications, and develop the regulatory dossiers, intellectual property and scalable manufacturing processes needed to bring them to market.
We work with partners through ingredient supply and selected co-development, combining Caelus’s upstream platform with partner product-development, market-access and commercial capabilities.
Founded in 2014 by pioneers in microbiome research, Caelus combines scientific, clinical, regulatory, intellectual property and manufacturing expertise to advance a portfolio of defined next-generation microbial strains.
