Caelus Life Sciences was founded in 2014 by award-winning scientists and pioneers in microbiome research. The company builds on decades of academic research in the Netherlands and combines strain discovery, translational science, human clinical validation, regulatory strategy, intellectual property, process development and ingredient supply in a single cardio-metabolic microbiome platform.

Our lead strain, Anaerobutyricum soehngenii CH106 (A. soehngenii), is the first live commensal gut bacterium of its kind to receive a positive safety opinion from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) under the EU Novel Food Regulation. Caelus’s GRAS notification for A. soehngenii resulted in FDA-notified GRAS status (GRN 1065), a testimony of the excellent safety profile and the rigour of the underlying data that Caelus presented.

Alongside it, Caelus is advancing a broader portfolio of defined next-generation microbial strains with differentiated biological pathways being investigated in the context of obesity, insulin resistance, prediabetes and type 2 diabetes, all increasingly prevalent cardio-metabolic conditions.
